EPL match preview: Chelsea v Manchester City
Two of the title favorites this season face off at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon. Here is our preview of the EPL fixture for Chelsea vs Manchester City game.
The season so far
Chelsea come into this game after four wins in their first five games. They have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season, dropping just points in their draw with Liverpool at Anfield. Romelu Lukaku has integrated perfectly into the team and is already the team’s top scorer with 4 goals in 5 games. The Blues have maintained their defensive form from last season, having only conceded once this season.

Manchester City will look to draw last weekend’s 0-0 draw against Southampton at the Etihad Stadium behind them. They produced some impressive performances, winning 5-0 to Arsenal and Norwich City, but also surprisingly losing 1-0 to Tottenham. At times City have looked a bit unstable in defense, conceding 3 times against RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

Concerns about injuries
Chelsea have potential concerns over injuries to their first-choice goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. He was replaced by Kepa for Saturday’s 3-0 win over Tottenham and he won’t be risky for the Carabao Cup draw against Aston Villa. Thomas Tuchel will be hopeful Mendy is in good shape for this game as his presence in the squad further reassures his defense. Christian Pulisic is also another player who will miss Wednesday night’s cup meeting as he is still recovering from an ankle injury he suffered while on international duty.

Pep Guardiola is facing a growing injury crisis with Ilkay Gündogan, Rodri, Aymeric Laporte and John Stones potentially missing this weekend. Manchester City will be without Oleksandr Zinchenko, absent due to a calf injury. That leaves City with only Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo as recognized full-backs available for a series of tough matches. Pep has confirmed to Sky Sports that he will have to field a number of young players against Wycombe Wanderers in their Carabao Cup draw.

Chelsea enter the game as a small favorite, especially if Manchester City miss Laporte and the Stones at the back. Gündogan is also said to be a significant absentee from the roster and his injury would result in a significant loss for the team. Romelu Lukaku has returned to Chelsea in fantastic form and appears to be a real handful in any defense. As the season progresses it will be interesting to see how Pep deals with not having a recognized goalscorer on his squad and in big games like this it could have a serious impact on their aspirations for the league. title.
