Albert E. Hauenstein, 101, died January 15, 2022. He was born in Tell City, Indiana on July 16, 1920, the son of Albert Sr. and Katie (Ahlf) Hauenstein.
Albert graduated from Tell City High School in 1938 and attended Purdue University. He joined the United States Navy and served on the naval destroyer USS Chauncey during World War II in the Pacific theater as a fire controller. After the war, he entered the multi-generational family clothing store Hauenstein’s in downtown Tell City. He married Kathleen Snyder in 1951 and had 6 children including 2 sets of twins.
Albert believed in living life to the fullest. He was a true family man, devoted husband and proud father of his 6 children. He often flew the skies as an avid private pilot, glider pilot, tow pilot, and glider flight instructor. Al was loved and respected by his friends, clients and colleagues. He was an approachable and kind person with a bright smile and an extraordinary personality.
Al loved his hometown and worked in many ways for the betterment of his community. In addition to owning and operating the Hauenstein store, he also owned Downtown Storage in Tell City. He was always busy at home tending to his pecans and walnut trees, enjoying the Gatchel family farm, where he made countless memories with his whole family. He attended various car sites with his son John, showing off and driving in his vintage 1967 Saab Monte Carlo automobile.
Albert was the Citizen Emeritus of Tell City in 2015 and the Grand Marshal of the Tell City Christmas Parade in 2021; was a life member of the E&R/EUCC church where he sang in the choir; was a past president of Jaycees, Kiwanis and Wabash Valley Soaring Assoc. clubs; was a member of the Tell City Historical Society; is an early direct descendant of the Perry County Indiana family dating back to the Swiss Colonization Society; was a Distinguished Hoosier awarded by Governor Daniels; received the State of Indiana Century Business Award from Governor Holcomb; was a Kentucky colonel and member of the American Legion.
He is predeceased by his parents, Katie and Albert Hauenstein, Sr.; brother Kay Hauenstein, sisters Caroline Hauenstein and Edna Licking. His wife of 64 years, Kathleen (Snyder) Hauenstein, his granddaughter Tori Kay Hauenstein.
He is survived by children Carol Henke (Wayne) of Greenwood, Indiana; Jan Hauenstein of Tell City, Indiana; David Hauenstein (Carolyn) of Elizabethtown, Kentucky; Nena Manci (Tony) of Franklin, Tennessee; Sarah Katherine Hauenstein (Lew Manci) of Columbus, Indiana; John A. Hauenstein (Rhonda) of Tell City, Indiana. Grandchildren Ryan Hauenstein, Andrew Manci, Lisa Manci, Erika McClain, Audra Van Doorn, Samantha Manci and Alyssa Henke. Great-grandchildren Maryn Manci and Winston McClain. Two nieces and three nephews.
The family would like to express their gratitude to all the friends who supported Al and those who were involved in his medical care.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at EUCC Church in Tell City with interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Tell City, alongside his beloved wife and granddaughter.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 18, 2022 from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Zoercher Gillick Funeral Home and from 9:00 a.m. until time of service Wednesday at EUCC Church in Tell City, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Tell City Historical Society, EUCC Church, or plants a tree in her memory.
